Bird Band Pliers
Bird Band PliersPliers
Suitable for small aluminium and plastic ring removal.
Remove unwanted closed aluminium and closed plastic leg bands.
A good tool to have available for the removal of closed aluminium and plastic bird leg rings.
Suggestions on how to removed closed leg bands.
Be careful, bird legs can easily be broken. It can help to have someone else hold the bird, while another concentrates on safely removing the band with two free hands.
Create room for the cutter to grip the band by holding the band away from the leg.
Use a smooth action without twisting the band against the leg. Cut one side of the band, then turn the band to make a second cut on the opposite side of the band.

Bird Bands
Bird BandsDont waste time and money driving around looking for bird leg rings.
We supplies bird leg bands / bird leg rings though out internationally,
How do you put on plastic bird leg bands / bird leg rings?
Open bird leg banding instructions for applying plastic open split bird leg bands / bird leg rings.
1. Use closed bird bands on birds that are still in the nest around 9 days old, while their foot is still small enough to fit through the bird band. |
2. Hold the bird’s leg. Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the bird’s foot. |
3. Hold the front toes together and slide them through the bird band. If they don’t slip through, the bird might be too old to use a closed bird band. |
4. Continue sliding the bird band over the back toe. If it gets caught you can use a toothpick or similar tool to help pick it through. |
5. Check that the bird band does not fall off. Check that the toes are not injured. |
How do you put on open metal bird leg bands / bird leg rings? Open bird leg ringing instructions for applying aluminium & stainless steel metal open split bird leg bands / bird leg rings. |
||||
1. Place the bird ring in pliers with the bird ring opening facing towards the open front of the pliers. |
2. Place the opened bird ring over the birds leg, between the birds knee and ankle. |
3. Close the pliers until the ends of the bird ring meet together. |
4. To finish closing the bird ring and to make a round shape, turn the bird ring 90 degrees so that the opening faces the side of the pliers. |
5. Close the pliers until the shape of the bird ring is round. Do not squash the bird ring too far onto the birds leg. |

D1000X Ultrasound Detector
D1000X Ultrasound DetectorD1000X Ultrasound Detector
D1000X Ultrasound DetectorD1000X Ultrasound Detector
The D1000X is a professional ultrasound detector, based on the latest technology. The detector has heterodyne, frequency division and time expansion systems and also a built-in 16-bit recording system using a Compact Flash card as storage medium. It is equipped with our well-known, high-quality capacitance microphone which has been further improved to give lower noise, wider dynamic range and lower distortion.
The D1000X has a built-in “recorder”, relieving the user from the hassle of operating a separate recording device or laptop with connecting cables. It can be configured to work in a variety of operating modes, but thanks to the use of “Profiles”, switching between different modes is made instantly. Each profile contains all the selectable settings such as sampling rate, triggering mode, time expansion factor and LED intensity and can be prepared in advance and saved in the detector.
At any time, either the direct ultrasonic signal, the heterodyne signal or the frequency division signal can be recorded onto the CF-card. Spoken comments can be recorded by speaking into the microphone while recording in the direct mode, or in a special comment recording mode (at a lower sampling rate). The recording time is limited only by the available space on the CF-card. Upon completion of a recording in the direct mode, the signal will be automatically replayed in time expanded form, if this function is enabled. Time expansion factors from 1 (original speed) to 30 can be chosen. The recordings can be made by manually starting and stopping the recording or through level-activated (and optional frequency selective) triggering. In the latter case, the detector can be set up for unattended capture of calls. Pre- and post-triggering modes with a variety of different settings can be used.
The wav sound files on the CF-card are stamped with date and time and can be read directly on a PC, using a standard CF-card reader. The D1000X also has a serial GPS input, making it possible to save GPS position data in the files.

D500X Ultrasound Detector/Recorder Mk IID500X Ultrasound Detector/Recorder Mk II
The D500X Mk II is as easy to use and provides the same features as the classic D500X, with the following exceptions:
- It does not include an internal microphone. Instead it ships with an external microphone which is either directly connected to the microphone jack or through an extension cable. The microphone jack is an XLR type so no adapter cable is required.
- It is powered by 4 C type batteries which last roughly three times longer than the AA batteries used in the classic D500X.
- The jack for external power is a standard 2.5 mm DC power jack for easy connection.

Harp Trap
Harp TrapThe Austbat Harptrap has been in continual production for over twenty years. Over that time it has been refined and improved to offer today’s bat worker the most effective, reliable and easy to assemble bat trap possible.
Sound design and selection of high quality lightweight materials result in a microbat harptrap that is:
- Effective – design refinements ensure excellent capture success combined with low escape rates;
User friendly – quick to assemble, easy to adjust; no tools are required; - Corrosion resistant – judicious use of stainless steel, brass and high grade anodised aluminium;
- Lightweight – the standard 4.2m2 trap weighs twelve kilograms, the carry bag just 500g;
- Interchangeable – all components adhere to our tight dimensional tolerances and are precision machined, enabling parts to be freely interchanged between traps if required. Future spare parts are guaranteed to fit the trap that you buy today;
- Proven – over 520 Austbat traps are operating in 18 countries around the world, covering a vast range of habitats, from steamy jungles to scorching deserts. This is a living testament to the dependability of the Austbat Harptrap.
Standard 4.2m2 two-bank traps and spare parts are generally available “off the shelf”. Mini two-bank traps (to any size), as well as three or four bank traps are made to order.
Traps are supplied fully strung and tension tested. A comprehensive assembly and maintenance manual is included. We generally supply the trap in a heavy duty watertight cartage tube, available in either a long version (hips stored in), or short version (hips stored separately). Alternatively, we can ship in a disposable heavy duty cardboard tube. Other options include a lightweight carry bag and stringing/spares kit.

Mist Net
Mist NetMist nets are used by ornithologists and bat biologists to capture wild birds and bats for banding or other research projects. Mist nets are typically made of nylon or polyester mesh suspended between two poles, resembling a volleyball net.
When properly deployed in the correct habitat, the nets are virtually invisible. Mist nets have shelves created by horizontally strung lines that create a loose, baggy pocket. When a bird or bat hits the net, it falls into this pocket, where it becomes tangled.
The mesh size of the netting varies according to the size of the species targeted for capture. Mesh sizes can be measured along one side of the edge of a single mesh square, or along the diagonal of that square. Measures given here are along the diagonal. Small passerines are typically captured with 30–38 mm mesh, while larger birds, like hawks and ducks, are captured using mesh sizes of ~127 mm. Net dimensions can vary widely depending on the proposed use. Net height for avian mist netting is typically 1.2 – 2.6 m. Net width may vary from 3 to 18 m, although longer nets may also be used.
(End User Certificate is required to Purchase Mist Net. These can be purchased only by Government Departments for Research purpose)
