THE DME
THE DMEULTRASOUND DISTANCE MEASURER
The DME instrument system from Haglöf Sweden offers speedy and reliable results for distance measuring in the forest. The DME system works with ultrasound technique, making it especially useful in dense terrain and where underbrush is thick. The built-in BAF functions are useful for point/plot sampling work. Basal Area (BAF)
The complete DME system includes the small and rugged DME measuring instrument, a transponder T3 and plot staff/monopod with adapter. The monopod with transponder is placed in the plot center, allowing the user to measure and determine the plot radius.
DENSE VEGETATION…
The complete DME system includes the small and rugged DME measuring instrument, a transponder T3 and plot staff/monopod with adapter. The monopod with transponder is placed in the plot center, allowing the user to measure and determine the plot radius.
MEASURE IN A FULL, 360° CIRCLE
The exact plot radius can be measured from any direction to the plot center when the T3 transponder is mounted on the monopod and the custom 360° adapter.
…IS NO PROBLEM FOR THE DME
The DME works with ultrasound technique Haglöf Sweden’s ultrasound instruments are tested and proven reliable in all types of terrain and conditions.
BAF FUNCTIONS BUILT-IN
With the Basal Area Factor (BAF) function you will know the minimum diameter for trees to be counted and included in the plot.
DME – DME
The DME can also work in pair, with two DME measuring instruments measuring the distance in between. This method is useful to maintain equal width for example in road construction work and when clearing along power lines.
THE DP DME
THE DP DMEULTRASOUND DISTANCE MEASURER ACCESSORY
The DP DME distance measurer is a unique instrument accessory for the DP II Computer Caliper and Digitech Professional. The DP DME works with ultrasound signals to determine distances, and is used to measure radius in sample plots and to quickly determine if a tree is standing within or outside the sample plot limits. A complete DP DME system consists from the DP DME measuring instrument accessory, a transponder T3, and a monopod staff with adapter
FROM THE CENTER OF THE TREE TO THE CENTER OF THE PLOT
The DP DME distance measurer is an instrument accessory for the Digitech Professional and the DP II. With the DP DME, measurements to determine if a tree is within the plot radius are performed with the help of ultrasound technique
The DP DME uses ultrasound to measure distances. The ultrasonic method is well proven and used in instruments such as the Vertex IV, the Vertex Laser and the DME. To measure with the DP DME, the T3 transponder is placed in the plot centre on a monopod staff. The DP DME is installed on the caliper comport and works with the host computer caliper and corresponding software. When measuring the tree diameter with the caliper, the DP DME can be activated to measure the distance from the tree centre to the transponder, placed on the monopod staff in the plot centre.
Computer caliper software
The DP DME accessory will work with most Haglöf Sweden computer caliper software applications after upgrading. The software can be customized to, for example, refrain from registering trees outside pre-set plot limits. The host computer supplies battery and display for the DP DME, and all instrument functions are software run.
The DP DME offers possibilities to have a distance connected with each individual tree. When performing circular sample plot inventory, the distance to the plot centre from the centre of the tree is automatically calculated by the caliper software. The software can be programmed with functions to warn or refrain from registering trees beyond the preset plot border.
THE DP GPS DME
THE DP GPS DMETHE DP Postex
THE DP PostexULTRASOUND DISTANCE MEASURER ACCESSORY
Use the DP Postex add-on with your DP II or Digitech Professional computer caliper to position trees and other objects in the forest. The DP Postex is great for operators that prefer to have the ultrasound in the DP caliper and to measure heights with a separate instrument, such as the Laser Geo.
The Postex solution from Haglöf Sweden is available in different system configurations. In the DP Postex system, the DP caliper and corresponding software application provides power, processor, memory and display for the Postex module.
The method for individual positioning of trees is perfect when connecting information on ground measured trees to a laser scanned air measuring operation, or to trace individual tree history on sample plots for research and follow-up work. The Postex solution is based on the triangulation method, and the positioning is made from three distances that have been determined by the set-up coordinate system in the Postex rack with transponders. The positioning accuracy allows for reliable results in long-term scientific research projects on tree individuals on permanent plots.
FROM THE CENTER OF THE TREE TO THE MAP
The DP Postex add-on operates with the coordinate system determined by the custom Postex rack and 3 ea T3 transponders. Use the DP II caliper software application Postax (or other application compatible with the DP Postex) for DP to collect, register and process your data. A Haglöf Sweden L5 laser instrument is recommended to measure the tree heights in the plot. The DP Postex module can also be operated with the DP II Terminal only and without the caliper measuring scale. This is useful when diameter data is not needed, such as to position historical sites and remains, for new plantations etc.
RUGGED, FIELD-READY AND DEVELOPED IN COOPERATION WITH LEADING SCIENTISTS
The DP Postex works with the DP II and Digitech Professional model (Bios v 1.66 and forward).
All functions are run through the software application in your caliper.
The custom Postex rack and transponders and a bubble for alignment are delivered in aluminum transport box. Postex® is available in different system configurations, all using the custom rack and ultrasound transponders. With ultrasound you are not limited to line of sight measurements and not bound to targets.

Use the built-in basal area functions to count number of stems in your EC II D-R with one of four basal area factors (0.5,1,2,4 or 5,10,20,40). The EC II D-R will automatically display a calculation of the basal area and give a volume estimate based on the dominant tree height or average height.
Calculate the distance with EC II D-R
For best possible results, stand as far from the tree as the tree is high when performing the measurement. To calculate the distance, set a reference height mark at 2m / 6ft on the tree.
- Put a mark on the tree at reference height 2m / 6ft. Walk away from the tree long enough to see the root, the reference mark and the top of the tree.
- First aim at the root and press the button until a signal is heard and the value freezes in the display.
- Aim at the reference height mark and press the button until the signal is heard and the value freezes. The calculated distance will show briefly.
- Aim at the tree top (or other height on the tree) and press the button until the signal is heard again and the value freezes. The calculated height value now shows in the instrument display.
Measure the distance manually
For best possible results, stand as far from the tree as the tree is high when performing the measurement.
